Tilt Tray Sortation Systems

Tech Conveyor's tilt tray sortation systems are designed to sort a wide range of package types and sizes at very high throughput rates. The packages are either manually or automatically inducted onto continuously circulating trays and are unloaded by tilting the trays at the proper destination.

Tech Conveyor's in-house staff designs and implements turn-key systems. Typical tilt tray applications include the sortation of cartons, envelopes, bags, etc., for distribution centers, photo laboratories, postal installations and airport luggage distribution.

The advantages of the Tech Conveyor tilt tray sortation system include:

    Reliability

    Gentle Product Handling

    High Sorting Capacity

    Worm Gear Drive

    Minimum Maintenance

    Low Noise Level

Controlled Tray Tilting to Either Side

    Controlled Tray Realignment

Wear Resisitant Chain - Requires no Lubrication or Take Up

All Electric - No Compressed Air Required

Manual or High Speed Automatic Induction

Double Tray sorting for Longer Packages

The drive transmission consists of a dynamically and statically balanced worm (or screw) gear. The worm gear is constructed of hardened and ground steel that continually engages the wear resistant plastic drive wheels which are attached to the chain. The worm gear itself is driven by a variable frequency motor and toothed belt. The drive assembly is enclosed in a housing that includes sound absorbent material and is mounted to the track via vibration dampeners. For longer tilt tray systems, multiple drives are utilized.

The special chain is manufactured from cast aluminum and is connected via universal joints, meaning that the chain can bend in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The drive, guide and load carrying wheels of the chain are made of wear resistant plastic and have a life-time lubrication. With this design, the chain does not require lubrication and/or take-up. The load carrying wheels are guided by a rigid track constructed of tubular steel. The track is attached to the support structure by vibration dampeners.

The tray carriages are bolted to the chain and can tip both left and right. The tray is locked in position in both the upright and tipped positions. Tipping is actuated by an electric solenoid and is controlled throughout the tipping process, resulting in quiet and gentle handling of packages. Packages that are too long for a single tray will span two (2) trays which are then tipped in succession. The trays are made of either wood or fiberglass reinforced polyester, Each tray can carry a package weighing as much as 35kg (77lb).

Standard tray pitches are 400cm(15.75 in.), 500mm(19.7 in.), 625mm(24.6 in.), 750mm(29.5 in), 1000mm(39.4 in.), and 1250mm(49.21 in.). The maximum sorting speed is 2.0 m/s (394 fpm). The trays can be utilized more than once per revolution to multiply the capacity of the system.

Tech Conveyor designs and fabricates high speed automatic induction systems. The automatic induction systems are comprised of precision fabricated high speed belt conveyors that are utilized to properly position the packages to be automatically placed on the tilt trays. The pulleys are specially balanced and driven by a programmable variable frequency motor and toothed belt. To achieve the highest possible sortation capacity, the Tech Conveyor software inducts packages onto the tilt tray from multiple automatic induction systems simultaneously.

Tech Conveyor'S in-house electrical control and software staff have developed an intel microprocessor based control for automatic inductors, tilt tray tracking, sort confirmation, chute status lights, in-motion scale communication, static scale communication, fixed laser scanner communication. RF communication, key entry communication, as well as communication with the Tech Conveyor Parcel Manifest System or host computer. Software support and maintenance is easily accomplished through the use of a Tech Conveyor Induction Controller or a Tech Conveyor Sortation Controller. These monitoring systems are equipped with a dial-in modem, hard disk, communication links to each of the automatic inductor groups and a menu driven operator interface. All of the information available to the local operator is also available over the modem line. Thus, full diagnostic capabilities, updates, etc., are available from an off-site location.
